Fred Hards
3rd Cornet
Fred was born in Minster near Ramsgate and apart from only two years, he`s lived there all of his life. He belonged to the Salvation Army in Minster and was taught to play cornet by Bram White. At the age of fourteen, Fred joined the Margate Silver Band where he stayed for thirty five years, and was chairman for a number of years. It was at Margate Silver Band where he met and married Audrey. They have now been married 44 years and have two sons. Fred has taught many youngsters to play over the years and gets real joy when they start playing out in the band. He joined Snowdown Colliery Welfare Band almost fourteen years ago and enjoys the friendships he has with everyone in the band. Fred also enjoys his garden, and says `He does his gardening in a fashion, but with two knee replacements watching him bend down is quite funny`. His hobbies (apart from music) is: Working with youngsters. Fred was a Cub leader for 16 years, and now helps run a youth club at the Minster Salvation Army for 10 - 18 year olds.
